An article by Steve Edwards, originally published in Orion Magazine, September 9, 2020: As September fades into October, the crickets remind him of childhood, family, lost innocence, and the passage of time. He imagines his younger self listening to the woods and remembers a time when his parents and grandparents were still young and alive. Hearing the final cricket would symbolize entering a moment of complete stillness where all these memories and contradictions could exist together. But every year, October arrives before he manages to hear that final chirp. The changing season brings new sounds, colors, and distractions, and he realizes that nothing in life is truly inconsequential, even though he often loses sight of that in the busyness of everyday life. By the time he notices the silence, it is already everywhere. He ends with the hope that, in spring, he will at least remember to listen for the first cricket.
